I believe that if we are going to improve our current economic situation we need to get back to basics, to realise our strengths in tourism and agriculture and also that through supporting one another on a community level we can create a model of economic sustainability to help us through this potential crisis. Lets face it; its highly unlikely that there is a magic solution to solve our current economic woes in the short term, what is certain however, is that we as a people can decide that we are going to get out there and work together to change every corner of this country; to solve our litter problem for instance, to improve street signange, to uncover and exhibit those archeological gems which lie abandoned in our towns and villages, to paint our buildings, to clean our streets, to organize weekly farmers markets and events to get people talking and spending locally, to plant trees and maintain green spaces. My idea is ultimately aimed at getting us motivated to work together to p More...

If one goes to Havana, one of the most life-affirming experiences for them is thetradition of staying with local Cuban familes for a very affordable rate. Hector did it for Irish TV
What we need is every town that is not regarded as a tourist-mecca, to appint a committe of local community-minded people and some patrons and benefacors with money to spare.
We establish a national network of hostel/B&B type accommodation co-ordinated by a central HQ in Dublin, these establishments will be affordable, clean and most of all reflect the character of the local community.
All centres will be not-for-profit and any profits will be re-invested back into the centre, and liek the GAA if there is a profit-making centre in a popular destaintion then that will be redistributed to accom centres that are not able to make a profit in other areas normally less visited.
We need to encourage our visitors to connect more with local Irish people - our biggest asset and tourist attraction - and we lso ne More...

Ireland's greatest resource is its people: Tourists come to Ireland for the antiquities, the scenery, golf, pony trekking, family history, any number of reasons. But they come back for the people. Lately when tourists come looking for the Irish wit and warmth, they find taciturn eastern Europeans serving the soda bread, pouring the pint, and guiding the tours. The 100,000 Welcomes have been outsourced!
Besides that, Shannon Airport is being sidelined -- the American visitor can no longer fly into Shannon from Atlanta, Philadelphia, or Chicago. This alone will cause great harm to tourism in the west of Ireland.
The re-invigoration of the Irish hospitality sector and the saving of Shannon Airport are my goals. My plan will address both of these issues. See "Destination Ireland, continued" D9794 for my plan.

Operation Invitation “Come sing with me in Ireland”
I would like to propose an innovative approach to revitalising every sector of Irish society. I truly believe the strength of any Nation is in its people, all over Ireland we have a host of voluntary organisations involved in Literature, Culture, Sport, Recreational activities, Agriculture, Senior Citizens the list is endless, looking at aviation and shipping maps its amazing all the regions that we connect to on a daily basis particularly in Europe. Yet we know tourism is not reaching out to all sectors the general impact is that tourist visit popular locations but have little or no impact on the real people of Ireland I propose that voluntary organisations personally invite similar groups across the world to visit their region. Remember the Special Olympics in Ireland and how successfully every town in Ireland hosted a different country this were an amazing network of good will and sense of involvement for people across th More...
