The village of Sandymount and adjacent areas in the south suburbs of Dublin are constructed on land that was reclaimed from the sea. Strand Rd is presently subject to flooding at high tide under certain climatic conditions. With the rise in sea levels this situation will get worse and the flooding will eventually become more extensive. This is probably one of the most vulnerable areas in Ireland. The government of the Netherlands is taking this very seriously and is strengthening its country's flood defences in preparation for the rise in sea level. There are a number of actions that could be taken in Sandymount. Firstly we could do nothing, let the flooding occur and just sacrifice the existing properties. Alternatively some type of flood defences could be constructed either inland with partial sacrifice of properties, along the existing seashore or further out to sea. As a reaction to the forecasted oil crisis, the proposal is an advancement of the most economical method of storing renewable energies, which is pumped storage. The use of this method is constrained by geography, needing a landmass to support the upper reservoir of the system and a lower reservoir of water. The proposal is a built structure to remove this constraint allowing the method to be used anywhere with a lower body of water. A monument that provides psychological benefit to the country, symbolising empowerment through harnessing our own abundant natural resources and reversing a long held dependency.
